If a cozy, rainy day inside is on the wish list (or maybe just a chance to channel Gene Kelly in Singin’ in the Rain), you’re in luck. Thanks to the new Rain Room exhibit presented by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and Restoration Hardware, visitors can experience a typical stormy day and downpour sans the umbrella.
The large-scale water installation, created by London–based artist collective Random International, is designed to pause at the first detection of human presence. So there’s no fear of getting drenched. “In Rain Room, the artists who are a part of the Random International collective have created a wondrous experience, achieved in an environmentally sensitive manner,” says Michael Govan, LACMA CEO.
Previously on display in both London (Barbican Centre) and New York (the Museum of Modern Art), the opening of Rain Room marks the West Coast debut. It’s also an integral part of LACMA’s Art+Technology initiative—contemporary programs that support artists’ experiences with art and technology. Earlier this year the museum, along with Hyundai Motor, launched a 10-year partnership dedicated to the exploration of art and technology. This is the first exhibit within the project.

PLAN YOUR DAY:
Terranea is proud to be the preferred hotel and resort of Lexus in Southern California. A fleet of luxury Lexus vehicles—including sedans, SUVs, hybrids and convertibles—are available to guests for test drives and day adventures. Take advantage of this special offer and arrive at LACMA in style. Please speak to the concierge for more information on making a reservation.
And don’t forget to pack a picnic … sea beans at Terranea offers a variety of sandwiches, salads, beverages and sweets to take away at a moment’s notice. We suggest laying a blanket down at one of the beautiful green spaces surrounding LACMA and taking in the natural artistry.
